Congratulations on receiving your scholarship!  As outlined in your award letter from Admissions, Dean’s Scholarships carry with them a 40–hour service obligation.

Options for fulfillment:

  • completion of a clinical course
  • completion of an externship
  • completion of a Marshall-Brennan Fellowship
  • participation in one or more pro bono projects
  • participation in Alternate Spring Break (up to 30 hours)
  • translation in connection with a pro bono project (up to 10 hours)
  • participation in a pre-approved external placement (You must obtain written approval prior to beginning the work and subsequently provide a letter from a supervising attorney verifying that 40 hours of service were performed, the work performed was legal, and that the work performed was satisfactory.)

Reporting/Recording Hours:

  • You must report satisfaction of your Scholarship Service obligation directly to Pam Mertsock-Wolfe Assistant Director for Pro Bono and Public Interest Activities ( pmertsoc@camden.rutgers.edu) via email with “Scholarship Service” in the subject line.
  • If you satisfy your scholarship service obligation through one or more pro bono projects, those hours count toward the service obligation and toward the graduation awards so all of those hours should be recorded on PHARS.  If you satisfy your service obligation through law school clinical courses, externships and/or the Marshall-Brennan Fellowship, these hours do not count toward pro bono awards because they are compensated with course credit, and therefore they should not be recorded on PHARS.
